One of the most accessible and immediate ways to anchor yourself in the present and cut through the noise of a hectic day is through focused breathing breaks. A few deep, intentional breaths can serve as a mini-meditation session, offering instant stress relief and a much-needed pause. The S.T.O.P & R.A.I.N technique, highlighted in the N.Y. Times mindfulness guide, is a perfect example of how a simple breathing exercise can transform a stressful moment into one of clarity and calm
Stop. Just take a momentary pause, no matter what you’re doing.
Take a breath. Feel the sensation of your own breathing, which brings you back to the present moment.
Observe. Acknowledge what is happening, for good or bad, inside you or out. Just note it.
Proceed. Having briefly checked in with the present moment, continue with whatever it was you were doing.
Recognize. Acknowledge what is happening, just noting it in a calm and accepting manner.
Accept. Allow life to be just as it is, without trying to change it in any way.
Investigate. See how it feels, whether it is giving you pleasure or pain, making you happy or sad. Just note it.
Non-Identification. Realize that the emotions you are experiencing make for a fleeting experience, one that will soon pass. It isn’t who you are.
Mindfulness, the practice of being fully present and engaged in the moment, can be seamlessly integrated into daily routines. Whether it's savoring the first sip of morning coffee, fully immersing in playtime with your children, or simply being aware of your surroundings during a walk, mindfulness can turn ordinary moments into opportunities for stress relief and joy. The benefits of mindfulness include improved sleep, emotional regulation, and an overall increase in happiness and well-being. As a mom it can be hard to slow down our thoughts and focused on what is in front of you. To practice mindfulness find something in front of you and comment on it. Id you are on a walk find a tree and make observations about it. Look at the skt and make observations about what you see. If you are playing with you children look at their hair, or their smile, laugh, energy and make kind observations about it. It's helpful in staying present and in the moment.
For moms seeking a quick energy lift, a short meditation focused on releasing stress, anxiety, and negativity can be incredibly effective. A guided meditation, like one found on YouTube, can help reset your mental state in just about 5 minutes, filling you with positive energy and readiness to tackle the rest of your day with confidence. A guided meditation can also be just audio through an app. Before going to pick up my daughter I will give myself 5 minutes to just sit in the car, listen to a mediation before driving off to get her. This helps me to unwind from the day and transition into my role as mom. It's like a reset to boost my energy and focus on the thing I find most important. My child!
The thought of adding one more task to an already overflowing to-do list might seem daunting. However, meditation doesn't require hours of your time. All the examples above give you quick ways to incorporating meditation and stress relief in your day to day. Even a few minutes a day can yield significant benefits, including reduced stress, improved focus, and enhanced mental clarity. Apps like Mindshine, Calm, Headspace and more offer tailored meditation and mindfulness exercises, making it easier for busy moms to find a practice that fits their schedule and needs.
